Auto arrange

The one you will actually use. It counts what is open and picks a grid that suits both the number of windows and the shape of your screen. Six windows become three across and two down on an ultrawide, not six unusable columns.

It knows your screen

Geometry is read live, so the menu bar and Dock are excluded and the same layouts work when you unplug and go back to the laptop display.

Per window, not per app

Two Chrome windows are two targets. Most tools treat them as one and quietly ignore the second.

No junk windows

Hidden helper windows that some apps keep open are filtered out, so they never eat a slot and leave a gap.

Save your own

Pick a template, choose which window goes in each slot, and save it under a name. Saved layouts appear at the top of the menubar menu, one click away.

Nine templates

Halves, thirds, 2/3 + 1/3, main + stack, quarters, narrow-wide-narrow, and a centred single window.

Leave windows alone

Any slot can be left empty, so a saved layout can rearrange three windows and not touch the fourth.

Also a command

The same layouts are available from a terminal if you would rather type lay auto than click.

Setting it up

Two minutes, once.

  1. Open the disk image and drag Window Layouts to your Applications folder.
  2. Launch it. A icon appears in the menubar. There is no Dock icon and no window.
  3. macOS will ask for Accessibility permission. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility and switch Window Layouts on.
  4. Click the menubar icon and choose Auto arrange.
Why Accessibility? Moving and resizing another app's windows is a privileged action on macOS, and there is no way around the permission. Every window manager needs it. Nothing is collected, and the app makes no network connections.

Requirements

macOS 26 or later

This build ships its own Python runtime, which targets macOS 26. Earlier versions of macOS are not supported yet.

Apple silicon

Built and tested on Apple silicon.

No Python needed

Everything is inside the app. Nothing to install, no dependencies, no background services.
